Pump testing is an integral and vital part of apparatus safety and maintenance. Think of an annual pump test as a test run of what could happen if the apparatus were called to a multiple-alarm fire where water in maximum volumes had to be moved and pressures had to be maintained for more than an hour. A multiple-alarm fire is no place to test the pump. However, the test pit is. All fire apparatus should be tested yearly, there should be no exceptions or excuses. One of our technicians will be on-site in the event minor repairs need to be made during the testing. Sometimes he is the only one who will be able to foresee a developing major engine or pump problem and can immediately discontinue the test.
